Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary
The keys to unlocking Costa Ballena
What is the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary?
Located just 7 kilometers south of Dominical, the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit operation that serves to rescue, rehabilitate and release a wide array of distressed animals in the Costa Ballena region. Built in conjunction with the Costa Rican government, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary offers 75 habitats, with residency varying from month to month as rescued animals are reintroduced into their natural habitats in the surrounding rainforest.
The Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary offers scheduled tours that reward visitors with rare close encounters with Costa Rica’s amazingly diverse wildlife. As a non-profit, 100% of tour fees and donations go towards feeding and caring for the distressed animals, as well as towards educating youth through the sanctuary’s Learning Center in order to sensitize future generations to the plight of Costa Rica’s cherished species.
